5 Tips to Find Your Style Through Minimalism
Something about fall makes me want to turn over my entire house. My closet gets a refresh, my refrigerator gets cleaned off - mostly, kid drawings excluded :) and I avoid fall decorations completely. The stager in me doesn’t have room for quaint decor that only exists to serve the season. This comes with zero judgment - frankly, I wish I had the urge to seasonally style but I find my book-stacked buffet far more aesthetically pleasing because I took time to find the pieces I really love and enjoy displaying those. Every time I come into this assessment phase, I use these principles. Now they’ve saturated my staging process and can help you better define your home too.
Identify Core Elements: We use this strategy for staging especially. Find your primary focal points - think architecture, views, or high ceilings. Focus on these elements and eliminate anything that doesn’t contribute or highlight. Usually that means clutter-weight on low pieces.
Utilize Negative Space: Don’t underestimate the power of empty space. It can enhance visual interest and create a more sophisticated look. Be strategic in allowing the eye to climb up the walls through varying heights and empty spaces. A great tip especially when having your home professionally photographed!
Choose a Limited Color Palette: Select two or three colors that complement each other. A cohesive color scheme can unify your design and maintain simplicity. But avoid being too formulated or you might start feeling a little too formulated.
Prioritize Functionality: Ensure that every design choice serves a purpose. Whether it’s a layout, a color, or even a texture, each element should feel like it’s opening to the room’s entrance rather than obstructing.
Refine: Minimalism is about continual refinement. Don’t be afraid to revisit your design and make adjustments to strip away the unnecessary. This is how homes gain their “curated” styles. It takes years of being selective and identifying items you truly love.
